Preparing Your Exam
Respondus Monitor is a companion application for LockDown Browser that uses webcam and video technology to prevent cheating during online exams. Respondus Monitor integrates seamlessly with learning management systems, and is ideal for non-proctored testing environments.
Respondus Monitor is a fully automated solution that eliminates the need for live proctors. Students can take the exam at any time of the day or night, and instructors can review flagging and assessment data on their own schedule.
Students use a webcam to record themselves during an exam. A "startup sequence" includes a webcam check and other requirements set by the instructor, such as showing identification or making a short video of the exam environment. Only the instructor can review video recordings or data from the exam session.
Respondus Monitor automatically flags students for suspicious behavior, such as leaving the computer during the exam, or a different person entering the video frame. This, along with other data, provides useful information to the instructor about the exam session.
Respondus Monitor integrates seamlessly with Brightspace. Students access exams from within the LMS itself. Instructors do everything within the LMS too, including post-exam review of the flagging data.
To avoid issues of the browser or computer freezing while you take a test, please take the following steps before beginning the quiz or exam:
Download the most recent version of Respondus Lockdown Browser. Respondus does not work on Chromebooks..
Watch the Respondus tutorial on how to take an exam with the browser.
Plug your computer in; do not use battery power during quizzes and exams.
Quit all apps, programs, files and browsers, including photo and camera apps. Do not just minimize programs, actually exit all programs, files, and browsers by going to file – close or closing with the red x.
Make sure your testing area is well-lit and that your face is visible.
Having notifications and pop up windows, such as low battery, prompts to save work, and messages can interfere with your test experience.
After you have closed everything, open your web browser and go to D2L. Do not have any other tabs open.
If your professor has given you a practice exam, use that to check your settings.
Respondus has live computer chat support to help you troubleshoot.
